Welcome to our gallery. My name is Karen Thomas and we started Toriizaka Art out of a desire to share our passion for art with others. We’ve spent the last 17 years in Tokyo -- raising a family, volunteering in support of a number of non-profit organizations and traveling throughout the world developing an understanding and appreciation for many different cultures and traditions. One of our passions has been collecting art during our travels. For years, friends who saw our eclectic collection asked us to help them source works to assist in building their own collections.
Toriizaka Art has welcomed hundreds of guests into our modest salon style space in central Tokyo since we first opened our doors. We feature a diverse, frequently changing selection of exceptional art. Our works include well known, respected artists as well as promising younger artists whose works have artistic merit.
We are fortunate to be able to bring in some of the finest available works due to the relationships we’ve developed with the artists. We don’t claim to be experts at predicting the future value or appreciation of various artists or specific pieces but we have been told time and time again that our pieces are of outstanding quality.
Most of our patrons have come to us by word of mouth and many have become friends. We welcome everyone who has an interest in the visual arts to come by to browse and enjoy the collection. Although a majority of our sales have been to Tokyo residents who have been able to come to view the art in person, an increasing number of pieces from our gallery have made their way to collections around the world.
In 2008, we held two major benefit exhibitions.
"Through Their Eyes", was held in November and featured more than thirty works by Le Minh Duc, Vu Cong Dien and Le Minh. In April, we featured Le Thanh Son in
"A Brilliant Life", a solo exhibition featuring twenty of his larger than life works. Both events were held at the fabulous Shinsei Bank 20th floor Exhibition Hall. Beneficiaries of the exhibitions included Room to Read (US$5,500), Tokyo English Life Line (US$4,865), Second Harvest Japan (US$3,850), Hands on Tokyo (US$2,500) and The Asian University for Women (US$ 1,365).
We are looking forward to featuring Dao Hai Phong and Nguyen Thanh Binh in
"A Peaceful Place", a two man exhibition scheduled to open on November 21, 2009. The exhibition will feature over 50 pieces selected by Toriizaka Art and the artists from their private collections. Room to Read, who is the beneficiary of this exhibition, looks forward to continuing their work of building schools and libraries in Vietnam with the proceeds from this event.
